Offshore Wind Codes and Standards
Offshore Wind Design AS offer engineering and design studies and projects for both the bottom fixed and floating offshore wind industry. The work is done in compliance with the applicable laws, government guidelines, CE marking, rules and regulations, offshore wind codes and standards and recommended practices. The requirements also vary based on the country where the wind plant is being installed.
Knowledge about the design standards, the requirements, safety levels and limitations are essential to design cost effective offshore wind plants.
Standardization Bodies and Organizations
There are many standardization bodies and organizations that produce codes and standards relevant for the bottom fixed and floating offshore wind industry.
- International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
- International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
- Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)
- European Committee for Standardization (CEN)
- European Standards (EN)
- British Standards Institute (BSI)
- American Petroleum Institute (API)
- Deutsches Institut fur Normung (DIN)
- Det Norske Veritas (DNV)
Codes and standards for floating offshore wind plants
The increased loads from floating offshore wind turbines may exceed what the turbines is certified for use on bottom-fixed foundations. This means that for floating wind, a more site and floater specific assessment must be done. In addition to the requirements, recommendations and standards for bottom-fixed foundations, the following is relevant for floating wind plants.
- DNVGL-ST-0119 Floating wind turbine structures
- DNVGL-RU-OU-0512 Floating offshore wind turbine installations
Codes and standards for bottom fix offshore wind plants
The most complete sets of codes and standards are for bottom fixed offshore wind is by DNV and IEC. The IEC is focusing on wind turbine and electronical components and system, whilst DNV is focusing on design, engineering, manufacturing, installation and operation. The most relevant for offshore wind mooring and foundations are listed below.
- DNVGL-ST-0054 Transportation and installation of offshore wind turbines
- DNVGL-ST-0126 Support structures for wind turbines
- DNVGL-ST-0437 Load and site conditions for wind turbines
- DNVGL-RP-0416 Corrosion protection of offshore wind turbines
